Graduate Diploma programmes
(IDD, University of Birmingham) Training Provider: University of Birmingham School/Institute/Dept./Centre: International Development Department (IDD) IDD has designed its Graduate Diploma programmes to meet the requirements of every prospective or current employee in the development sector. However each course allows the choice of optional modules, giving students the ability to customise their chosen course further. From 2006-7 we are offerering nine Graduate Diploma programmes. The Graduate Diploma provides entry for applicants without the required qualifications for the direct entry onto a Masters Course. Graduate Diploma students, who consistently perform well, may be transferred to the Masters programme and proceed to complete a dissertation withing the same academic year. Interm qualifications at Masters level may also be awarded. These are the Postgraduate Diploma and the Postgraduate Certificate. Graduate Certificate in Arts
(University of Melbourne) Training Provider: University of Melbourne School/Institute/Dept./Centre: School of Anthropology, Geography and Environmental Studies The Graduate Certificate provides the opportunity for students to complete a short, coherent program of study in environment and development, and provides a good introduction to academic study in the discipline. The Graduate Certificate may qualify students to proceed to the Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or the Master of Development Studies (coursework). Graduate Diploma in Arts

The course is suitable for general interest or professional development purposes and does not require a research project or thesis. Graduates are provided with a pathway to higher degree study and may qualify for entry to the Postgraduate Diploma or professional Masters by Coursework. Students will gain considerable knowledge in an area of development studies and engage in critical assessment of the major theoretical claims of the discipline. The course provides a pathway to higher degree research for students who have not completed a four year BA (Honours) with a research component in Development Studies. Part-time enrolment is only permitted under exceptional circumstances, subject to approval of the course coordinator and the Head of SAGES. Diploma in Children, Youth and Development

Staff of institutes of higher education and research and those who intend to follow a career path in this field are also welcome. Diploma/Certificate in Globalisation and Labour Rights
(Institute of Social Studies) Training Provider: Institute of Social Studies (ISS) School/Institute/Dept./Centre: Institute of Social Studies (ISS) The course is primarily for mid-career trade union members, and other individuals involved in the promotion of human/worker/labour rights. Economic globalisation poses major challenges for labour with increasing problems of unemployment, reduction of social security and informalisation of work. The courses expose the participants to these issues and possible interventions within a human/labour rights framework. The curricula have been developed on the basis of extensive discussions with the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU). Certificate in Gender and Economic Policy Analysis (Institute of Social Studies)
Training Provider: Institute of Social Studies (ISS) School/Institute/Dept./Centre: Institute of Social Studies (ISS) Mid-career economists and other social scientists that work for international development organisations, government agencies and NGOs, as well as academics, who want to better understand the gendered character of economies as well as seek to develop economic policies that are gender-aware. For economists, the course will have a more technical focus, while for others, the course will have a less technical focus, emphasising interdisciplinary readings and exercises. Training Provider: Institute of Social Studies (ISS) School/Institute/Dept./Centre: Institute of Social Studies (ISS) Development Law and Social Justice is a non-assessed certificate programme primarily intended for professionals who are working in NGOs active in the promotion of social justice and human rights, and for academic staff of universities who are actively and directly associated with the work of NGOs in the same fields. Some participants work in governmental institutions or international organisations. The DLSJ programme combines academic reflection on human rights issues with experiential learning based on active input from the programme participants. Substantive experience and active involvement in the struggle for the realisation of human rights are essential requirements for admission to the programme. Training Provider: Institute of Social Studies (ISS) School/Institute/Dept./Centre: Institute of Social Studies (ISS) This three week intensive post-graduate course offers an opportunity to learn how to analyse SRH problems in the wider social development context, to systematically plan interventions, and to manage SRH interventions which empower women, involve men and recognise the rights of young people; and a unique chance to study the principles of the Dutch approach at work. The course is ideally suited to young and mid-career policymakers, (health) professionals and researchers from government and (I)NGOs, who need a short intensive introduction/updating in gender sensitive and participatory analysis. Development Project Management Institute (Monterey Institute of International Studies)
Training Provider: Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) School/Institute/Dept./Centre: Graduate School of International Policy Studies The Development Project Management Institute is a professional training program designed to prepare those who aspire to engage in humanitarian aid or long-term development work in Africa, Asia, Latin America or anywhere else extensive poverty is present. DPMI provides participants with the skills needed for effective professional practice in an environment that addresses both local and global responses to important development challenges. The DPMI program teaches practical skills such as project design, project monitoring, strategic partnering, and the training of trainers. Offered three times a year, at three different locations, DPMI provides the flexibility and opportunity for working professionals, students not enrolled at the Monterey Institute, and current Monterey Institute students to participate at the site and time of their choice.
