Course Type: Doctoral Degrees
Training Provider: University of Birmingham
School/Institute/Dept./Centre: International Development Department (IDD)

Studying for a doctorate with IDD means being part of an active research and practitioner community that will support you in accomplishing your academic goals.

All students studying for a doctoral degree pursue their own original research, under the guidance of a supervisor.  This freedom is often attractive to people planning a career in academic or training institutions or who aim to work in policy planning units of public sector agencies.  Each student is assigned a supervisor and is also supported by two other academic staff members as co-supervisors.

Students are assigned their own study space and computer in the department.

An individual training plan is drawn up to meet the needs of each student, based on a training needs assessment, covering both discipline-specific and transferable skills.  Discipline-specific training generally includes research methods and specialist modules taught by IDD.  A wide range of desirable skills related to working a research environment; research management, personal effectiveness, communcation, networking and team working, and career management have been identified.  Any gaps in their own skills portfolio identified by students can be filled during their period of study through attending courses offered by the department, the School of Public Policy or the University's Graduate School
