The Master Program in Cooperation and Development (CD) aims at training professionals in the field of international cooperation. Students are prepared to work in institutions which operate in the area of cooperation and development, such as International Organizations, Governmental Bureaus, firms working in Developing Countries, Public Institutions, Non-Governmental Organizations, and other no-profit organizations.

The Master lasts 15 months, beginning on November 2007 and ending on January 2009. It is a full time Master Program which includes a residential period of class work in Pavia – from November to June – and an internship period which will take place between July and December. The residential part of the curriculum foresees 600 hours of class and 180 hours of workshops and tutorials.
The Master degree will be awarded to successful students in January 2009.

Deadline for applications:
- June 30 for foreign citizens
- September 30 for italian citizens

The Master is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach to the realm of Cooperation and Development that links the subjects explored in the coursework to three highly distinct yet strongly interrelated disciplinary areas: Economics, Human and Institutional Studies, Project Cycle Management.  The program is structured into two main parts:

  • a preliminary phase of the curriculum provides students with the basic economic and statistical tools for quantitative and qualitative analysis
  • a second phase includes core courses and optional modules in each of the three areas of study mentioned above

During the economic part of the program students will be supported by weekly tutorials. Moreover, seminars and conferences will be organized throughout the academic year. At the end of each term students are assessed through means of regular examination or submission of papers.

The residential part of the Master Program is followed by an internship during which students undertake a practical experience either within NGOs or International Organizations. Internship is compulsory and lasts between 3 to 5 months.

To fulfil all academic requirements and be awarded the Second Level Master Degree students are required to draft and discuss a thesis related to topics studied in class and activities carried out during the internship.

The Master is fully taught in English.

The Cooperation and Development School of Pavia is one of the postgraduate schools of the Institute for Advanced Study – IUSS.

The IUSS in founding the School in Cooperation and Development joined three Italian NGOs:

CISP
– Comitato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo dei Popoli
COOPI
– Cooperazione Internazionale.
VIS – Volontariato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo

This strong partnership is an absolute innovation in the Italian and International array of Schools that provide training in Cooperation and Development. This joint venture is an essential feature of the School and one of the keys to our success. By bringing together academics and practitioners in the field of cooperation and development, it gives our students a complete and complex vision of what they will be studying at the School.

Ever since its creation, 8 years ago, the School has been working in the field of training, university cooperation and research.

Nowadays the School offers two Master Programs: one in Cooperation and Development and the other in Cooperation and International Economic Integration. More than 200 students have successfully graduated in past years and application to our courses increase more and more every year, mainly because we encourage application from candidates from all over the world and due to the fact that our Programs are completely taught in English.

The School is also an active member of several institutional networks. It cooperates with European Universities and NGOs in providing postgraduate education in cooperation. It works together with Universities in Latin America and in the Middle East in promoting master programs in related subjects.

The academic staff of the School is predominantly active in research activities, especially in the fields of development economics, human development and inequality.
