Course Type: Short Courses
Training Provider: University of East Anglia
School/Institute/Dept./Centre: International Development UEA

Three realities inform the current age:

1. Information and Communication Technologies are becoming smaller and more mobile
2. Monitoring is moving from a top down, ‘we look at you’ culture to a more democratic, ‘we are all accountable’ mode
3. Popular social media platforms like Facebook provide new opportunities for Information Systems of all kinds

Media – Impact - Sustainability - Resilience - Well Being: These are all terms of vital importance to projects of all kinds. Information Systems are expected to provide a range of powerful outputs, including:

·         Indicators of all kinds - performance, sustainability, impact, etc.
·         Other forms of measurement information
·         Organisational appraisal
·         Knowledge

With the advent of ‘the cloud’ information can be anywhere and accessible by a variety of devices. Management Information Systems no longer need to be located on a PC or other form of fixed computer. This course is focused on the use of a wide range of information technologies to provide diverse forms of information which can be applied in management in a variety of ways.

Course Content

This short course provides all those engaged in Information Management with the opportunity to develop an Information System in plan and in prototype over a two week period. In Week One you will be facilitated in understanding and designing your own Information System in outline. This may be based on a spreadsheet, an access database, social media, a blog, or a wiki.  You will be prompted and encouraged to consider what your information needs are prior to your arrival at UEA. The first week provides a practical and usable information system design including:

·         A view of the current known and ‘hidden’ problem issues in your specific context
·         A plan to develop information culture in your organisation
·         An end user view of information products and inputs
·         A blended and workable model of the final Information application containing both social and technical objectives for the system
·         An overview of the interfaces which will be used in the App
·         Details for the roll-out including implementation strategy, training structure and hardware and software issues

In Week Two you will be assisted by an MIS application engineer, to take the design on from week one and develop it into a functional prototype. Whilst this will involve some software skills, the course Software Engineer will usually encourage you to make use of commonly available software packages (e.g. database, spreadsheet and WWW technologies).
