Due to the excellent level of the activities promoted and carried out, on the 8th of July 2005 the Institute was recognized by the Ministry of Education, University and Research as a "Scuola Superiore ad ordinamento speciale". Before, this recognition was only awarded to three other Schools devoted to Higher Education in Italy: Scuola Normale di Pisa, Scuola Superiore Sant´Anna and SISSA in Trieste. Unique in the completeness of its training fields, which allows a strong interdisciplinary approach, IUSS aims at contributing to the development of talented young people, offering them at any step of their higher education path, highly qualified training programs to enhance their capabilities and knowledge. The Institute is also committed to scientific progress and is therefore involved in preparing young researchers and developing research programs. The IUSS offers training and research activities as follows: 1. Internal courses open, on a merit base, to the most promising students of Pavia´s University; 2. II Level University Master degrees which are generally fully taught in English and have a strong International vocation. 3. PhD Degrees that provide an interdisciplinary point of view and exposure to cutting edge research. THE EUROPEAN SCHOOLS OF ADVANCED STUDIES (ESAS) The IUSS has established several European Schools of Advanced Studies aimed at providing highly specialized postgraduate-level programs (International University Master's programs) within a broad European educational network in order to meet today's professional requirements.
