“Enhance the role of the media in a democracy and promote the move towards professional and free media in the Southern African region”

The specific aim of NSJ as a non-governmental organization is to enhance the skills and professionalism of mid-career journalists and other media practitioners and media trainers in Southern Africa. The broader vision is one of Southern Africa’s citizens being still better informed and equipped in order to participate actively in the formation of just and democratic societies.

Today NSJ is Southern Africa’s most important regional mid-career training institution for journalists and media managers. Most of the NSJ courses consists of  two-week sessions that cover varying topics related to knowledge, skills and attitudes of media practitioners.

NSJ courses funded from its core budget are offered free of charge. Participants are, however, required to finance 45% of the travel costs.

PLEASE REFER TO THE NSJ WEB-SITE FOR MORE INFO!

Training for better skills in Journalism in the SADC region

Intermediate and advanced level journalists: As a regional institution, its is especially appropriate that NSJ address intermediate and advanced levels since many national institutions have very limited capacity at this level.  The vast majority of courses will therefore be at these levels.  According to NSJ's research, this is in line with the expectations of the many of the region's journalists, who when surveyed, regard NSJ's role as going beyond skills into analysis of rights and responsibilities of journalists and questions of the media environment, and its relation to democracy and development.

Media managers: Without a competent media management corps, the viability of the industry is threatened, ultimately impacting on the ability of the media to fulfil its roles in society.  Furthermore, without supervisors proficient in human resource management, journalists returning from training risk being hindered in applying their learning.

Media trainers: Media trainers are of critical importance for the continued capacity development of the media corps.  NSJ is one of the few institutions that provide this form of training, which potentially has the greatest multiplier effect in the media industry.

Women in media:
Female media practitioners continue to hold a disadvantaged position in the southern African media environment.  NSJ will continue its effort to recruit women to its courses and will grant full scholarships for women attending the media management courses
