The University of Bergen is Norway's International University. Every year it welcomes large numbers of foreign students and researchers from all over the world.

In addition research and education in the traditional university disciplines, the academic profile of the University of Bergen has two major focuses: marine research and co-operation with developing countries.

Marine Research
The University of Bergen is a northern cornerstone of European marine science. Situated at the shores of the Atlantic Ocean the university is ideally placed to conduct studies into various aspects of marine research.

The university has also developed many multi-disciplinary approaches to marine research that include the involvement of scientists from the humanities, medicine and social sciences.

International co-operation:
In addition to extensive international collaborations in marine research, the University of Bergen gives high priority to collaboration with universities in developing countries in fields such as health, poverty, and resource management.

The overall aim is to initiate, facilitate and conduct relevant research, to encourage local competence building and to support the development of research facilities in these countries.

Students from developing countries are also offered master-level and doctoral training at the University of Bergen.

Faculty of Psychology
Courses: 1

Although Psychology is a young faculty in a young university, it too is actually rather older than its date of founding as such might suggest. Teaching in the Department of Psychology started in 1964, and the Cand. psychol. programme got under way in 1968; its first graduates qualified in 1973.

More than 1,800 students are currently registered for courses at various levels in the Faculty, which has already produced over 900 Cand. psychol. graduates.

In 1980, the rapidly growing Department became the Faculty of Psychology, while its former sections have since been amalgamated into four departments. The Faculty also houses three special units: Hemil; the Child Welfare Training Programme; and the Education Research Programme.
